Hyderabad Metro Expansion
Hyderabad Metro Phase II is set to include six new corridors, aimed at connecting the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Shamshabad to the upcoming 'Fourth City' via Mansanpally Road and the Outer Ring Road (ORR). The extension is a major step in enhancing the city’s infrastructure, with a budget of Rs 8,000 crore and a route covering 40 km. The project includes 2 km of underground tracks near the airport, 20 km of elevated tracks, and 18 km at road level. It also aims to improve connectivity to the growing Skill University area.
Broader Metro Phase II Plan
The airport metro extension is part of Hyderabad Metro's larger Phase II, which will cover 116.2 km and has an estimated cost of Rs 32,237 crore. Five additional corridors are planned to complement the airport extension, focusing on connecting key areas like Kokapet Neopolis, the Old City, Patancheru, and Hayatnagar. These new lines will improve public transport and enhance Hyderabad's urban mobility.
Approval and Planning
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has already given the green light for the extensions. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) is working on a traffic study under the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP). Once completed, Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) will be submitted for central government approval. Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML) Managing Director NVS Reddy has also revealed plans for the routes and station locations.
Key Corridor Extensions
- Airport Metro Line: Extending 36.6 km from Nagole to Shamshabad Airport, the route will pass through key locations such as LB Nagar, Karmanghat, and Chandrayangutta. It will have 24 stations with 35 km of elevated tracks and 1.6 km underground.
- Green Line Extension (Corridor VI): This 7.5 km extension will run from MGBS to Chandrayangutta, covering historical areas like Shalibanda Junction and Falaknuma. Approximately 1,100 properties will be impacted by this extension, but careful planning will ensure 103 heritage and religious sites are preserved.
Other Corridors in Phase II
- Corridor V: From Raidurg to Kokapet Neopolis (11.6 km), passing through Hyderabad's financial district.
- Corridor VII: From Miyapur to Patancheru (13.4 km), along the Mumbai highway.
- Corridor VIII: From LB Nagar to Hayatnagar (7.1 km), along the Vijayawada highway.
Conclusion
With the launch of Hyderabad Metro Phase II, the city is on the verge of a new era in urban development. These expansions will not only improve public transportation but also boost connectivity between major residential, commercial, and industrial hubs, supporting Hyderabad’s growth as a modern metropolis.
