In a boost to public transportation and regional connectivity, Union Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy announced that Hyderabad’s Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) will soon extend services from Ghatkesar to Yadagirigutta. This significant extension aims to shorten travel times and improve access for thousands of devotees traveling daily to the renowned Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple in Yadagirigutta. The minister shared these updates after reviewing ongoing developments at Cherlapally satellite railway station, a major project expected to ease congestion at Hyderabad’s busiest rail terminals.
MMTS Expansion to Yadagirigutta
The MMTS expansion to Yadagirigutta is set to commence soon, with tenders being processed to finalize the construction timeline. According to South Central Railway (SCR) officials, the existing MMTS line currently reaches Ghatkesar, and the planned extension to Yadagirigutta will reduce travel time to under an hour, addressing the current two- to three-hour journey that involves multiple transport modes. The new line will offer affordable fares and reliable service, benefiting the hundreds of pilgrims and tourists who visit Yadagirigutta each day, particularly on weekends.
Major Upgrades at Cherlapally Satellite Station
In addition to the MMTS expansion, the Cherlapally satellite station is undergoing a major redevelopment at an estimated cost of Rs 430 crore. Once completed, this upgraded terminal will alleviate congestion at Hyderabad’s main rail hubs—Secunderabad, Hyderabad, and Kacheguda—by providing an alternative station with a 25-train pair capacity and a total of 19 lines, thanks to 10 newly added lines. Minister Reddy confirmed that 98% of the station's work is complete, with the remaining phases set to wrap up shortly.
The Cherlapally station will be equipped with modern amenities, including an executive lounge, spacious waiting halls, sleeping pods, cafeterias, EV charging points, and enhanced accessibility through lifts, escalators, and foot-over-bridges. This station upgrade aligns with efforts to make travel smoother and more convenient for Hyderabad’s growing population.
Sustainable Development Initiatives
Sustainability has been prioritized in Cherlapally’s redevelopment, with environmentally friendly measures such as relocating 500 trees, implementing rainwater harvesting systems, installing solar panels, LED lighting, and setting up a sewage treatment plant. In addition, a compensatory afforestation effort has planted 5,500 new trees. These measures underscore the project’s commitment to eco-conscious infrastructure that benefits both the environment and local communities.
Rail Manufacturing and Safety Advancements Across Telangana
Minister Reddy also provided updates on the Rs 521-crore rail manufacturing unit at Kazipet, where construction is progressing swiftly. This facility will bolster the regional railway manufacturing industry, creating jobs and advancing Telangana’s industrial capabilities.
In a significant move for railway safety, the indigenously developed KAVACH system, a robust automatic train protection technology, is being implemented across Telangana’s railway networks. This system is designed to enhance the safety and efficiency of train operations, positioning Telangana as a leader in adopting cutting-edge rail technology.
Future of Hyderabad’s Rail Connectivity
These developments reflect a strong commitment to transforming Hyderabad’s transportation landscape, enhancing both intercity and regional travel options. With the MMTS expansion to Yadagirigutta and the upgraded facilities at Cherlapally station, commuters and pilgrims alike will experience more convenient, safe, and sustainable rail travel.
The continued investment in rail infrastructure and safety technology points to a brighter, more connected future for Hyderabad and Telangana.
