Hyderabad: The state government is actively contemplating the relocation of the historic Hyderabad Race Club from its current site in Malakpet to the upcoming Fourth City, proposing alternative land as part of the arrangement. The racecourse, which spans 168 acres, is one of the oldest in the country and has been an integral part of Hyderabad’s cultural landscape since its establishment.
Sources indicate that discussions regarding the provision of an alternative land parcel—potentially one-and-a-half times larger than the existing Malakpet site—are at an advanced stage. A final decision on this significant move is expected soon.
In conjunction with the proposed relocation, the government is also considering acquiring land from the dilapidated City Police Line (CPL) quarters in Amberpet. This land could be utilized to generate funds for the ambitious Musi River cleaning project.
A Legacy from Maulali to Malakpet
The Hyderabad Race Club has deep historical roots, dating back to 1886 during the reign of the Nizams. Initially established in Maulali, the race club was relocated to its current site by the sixth Nizam, Mir Mahbub Ali Khan, later that same year due to its proximity to his palace. The Hyderabad Race Club was officially established in Secunderabad in 1961, with operations shifting to the Malakpet site by 1968.
Over the decades, the racecourse has gained national acclaim, hosting numerous prestigious events and witnessing significant growth within the heart of the Old City. However, with urban expansion accelerating, the government believes there is potential for further development if the racecourse is relocated to a more spacious area outside the city. The proposal under discussion includes the possibility of handing over the Malakpet land to private developers for commercial purposes, thereby contributing to the city's overall development.
Proposed Developments
Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has reportedly discussed the relocation proposal with Race Club Chairman R. Surender Reddy and other key stakeholders. The state government has offered a larger alternative land for the relocation, along with the potential development of a golf course situated between Shamshabad Airport and Fourth City as part of the agreement.
As these discussions unfold, the fate of the Hyderabad Race Club, along with the potential urban development surrounding it, remains a topic of keen interest for residents and stakeholders alike.
