The Railway Board has cleared the ₹640 crore tender to extend the South Central Railway (SCR) Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) from Ghateskar to Raigir near Yadadri, covering about 33 km. This project is scheduled to be completed within two years, enhancing transportation options for pilgrims visiting the Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple.
Union Minister for Coal & Mines and Secunderabad MP G. Kishan Reddy announced the update at a press conference in Hyderabad on Thursday (October 24, 2024). With the State Government opting out of funding two-thirds of the project, the railways decided to proceed independently, given the project's potential benefit to temple-bound pilgrims.
Expansion of MMTS Phase Two
Following the completion of MMTS phase two, which connects the twin cities to suburban areas like Umdanagar, R.C. Puram, Medchal, Lingampally, and Cherlapalli, this extension is expected to ease traffic and reduce pressure on the region’s roads.
Pending State Contribution
Minister Reddy noted that the State Government owes the railways approximately ₹800 crore as part of its contribution to MMTS development. He also committed to improving train services, assuring that he would personally monitor the timings and frequency to streamline operations.
₹32,000 Crore Ongoing Railway Works
Besides the MMTS extension, railway works worth ₹32,000 crore are in progress, including projects awaiting land acquisition or funding. Major initiatives, such as track doubling, tripling, and electrification, as well as station upgrades, are advancing steadily.
